If I'm the Lakers I pull the trigger on that deal in a heartbeat. That's great value for Kobe, given that AK47 actually plays hard this season.

Yet such is the tension around the team now that Bryant can't sit out a practice without sparking an immediate panic that he's leaving for Chicago or Dallas, with multiple sources insisting that Bryant -- who possesses the league's only active no-trade clause -- lists the Mavericks as his No. 1 destination.

Cuban began by saying that nobody in the Mavs organization had talked to the Lakers about trading for Kobe. He then made it clear that he'd be more than willing to chat with Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak. "Kobe is a phenomenal player, and the Mavs have always been opportunistic since the day that I bought them," Cuban said, as his dance partner Kym Johnson tried not to look totally bored. "So, if something were to present itself, we’d always have to explore it. But we have a great team."

As many have probably already heard from breathless media reports, there was a rumor this afternoon that Kobe Bryant had cleaned out his locker and told the Lakers that he had played his final game for them. The report had Kobe and his agent meeting with Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak (or maybe it was the president of Iran and a few Martians. That will be tomorrow's talk, probably). Additional rumors had Kobe on his way to Dallas or Chicago (or, one of the options he presented this summer, Pluto). According to Kobe, none of it is true. Draw your own conclusions based on what we know for certain... -- Kobe didn't practice again today, and apparently it was because of a ``mutual decision'' with Phil Jackson and not because of injury concerns. -- Kobe didn't emerge from the training facility until 2:40 p.m. -- ostensibly after treatment on his knee -- at which point he told reporters the following...

So edgy is Lakerland that Bryant, after dodging the media for a few days, was forced to address reports Tuesday that he has already cleaned out his locker at the team's practice facility. One team source insisted to ESPN.com that Bryant indeed removed his personal belongings, but Bryant and agent Rob Pelinka told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher that Kobe had merely cleaned up his locker after Monday's practice, leaving plenty behind. The Lakers, according to NBA front-office sources, have no looming intentions to initiate any Bryant trade discussions and would still prefer to hang onto to their most popular player since Magic Johnson. There is nonetheless a growing belief around the league that the proposals will be flooding in now and that Bryant will indeed be moved -- possibly even before the season starts -- after last week's admission from Lakers owner Jerry Buss that he "would certainly listen" to trade offers for Bryant in the wake of Kobe's loud declaration last May that he wants out … and Kobe's subsequent refusals to recant the request. -ESPN.com
Bryant broke his silence Tuesday with 98 seconds' worth of insight, acknowledging he was taken aback by Buss' comments, but saying he would "strap it up" and play for the Lakers, assuming he was on their roster for the season opener on Oct. 30. Some questions posed by reporters were of the extreme type, including whether Bryant had played his final game in a Lakers jersey. "I don't know," Bryant said. "Talk to Mitch and Mr. Buss about that. I'm just getting ready. If I'm here, I'm ready to strap it up. My job is to play the game and get ready to play the game, and that's what I'm doing." Even Jackson did not peer too far into the future. "We can't project anything right now," he said. "I think there's a certain progression of things that we have to go through. "We have to see how the feelings are in the situation, see if there can't be some remedies for it. From there, the next step takes place, and that is, how do we go forward as a basketball club?"

Bryant did acknowledge as he left the team's workout facility Tuesday that he was thrown by Lakers owner Jerry Buss' comments six days ago about possibly trading Bryant. "It's crazy to deal with this," Bryant said. "One thing that I said (at the start of) training camp was I didn't want this to be a distraction. That's why it was our understanding to kind of not bring up the situation and not talk about it. To kind of have this go on now, it's a bit of a distraction. "We just wanted to keep things quiet, go about our business. It kind of caught me off guard a little bit. We've just got to get back to basics and just get ready and go from there." With even Jackson left staggering in the dark a bit regarding Bryant's mental whereabouts, Bryant offered public words of reassurance he will maintain a professional approach this season. "It's my job to play basketball," he said. "It's not my job to worry about what management is doing and this, that and the other. Like I said, I'm just going to get ready and let them do their job."
