Brad Miller to the Sonics
Hurray for the 7 foot point guard!! Hopefully Miller will bringing tons of triple-double cash to the Sonics pockets.
The Sonics made their first move prior to the trading deadline. They acquired All-Star center Brad Miller from the Sacramento Kings for point guard Luke Ridnour and forward/center Jorge Garbajosa. Neither the Kings nor the Sonics will likely make the playoffs this season. This deal is more oriented toward improving these teams for the future. Cap space and filling future holes in talent were perhaps the purpose of this deal for both teams.
The Kings had a huge hole at point guard because of the Mike Bibby to Atlanta Hawks deal. John Salmons did an admirable job playing point guard, but Luke Ridnour is a huge upgrade at point guard. Jorge Garbajosa will then be an excellent backup at the forward positions. He will even add some outside scoring to those traditionally inside positions. This is a skill the Kings do not have at power forward or center. The salary cap situation should be somewhat improved as well. Garbajosa’s contract essentially gives the Kings about $5.75 million in extra cap space in that third season.
The Sonics saw the potential of adding another key player to their rotation. He also consolidates the team’s contracts, making it easier to handle these players for the rotation. Potentially, this does hurt the Sonics ability to add free agents. The cost for Brad Miller is somewhat greater than Garbajosa’s and Ridnour’s. The Sonics though are hoping to address the point guard question in the draft or with their cap space. Point guard is the team’s next major addition. For now, they get to experiment with Brad Miller’s handling and passing. He will get to play point guard minutes and the Sonics will have a very interesting lineup of Brad Miller, Tony Allen, Kevin Durant, Jeff Green, and Andrea Bargnani with Juan Dixon, Josh Childress, Chris Wilcox, and Johan Petro earning minutes off the bench.
Seattle Supersonics Director of Basketball Operations KyleCleric: “We expect great things from Brad Miller in the next few years. He is still one of the best centers in the league and certainly one of the most versatile players. This team is built on flexibility and we identified very early on that Brad Miller would be a target of ours via trade. We are very pleased that he is now with the team. ”
