The Boston Celtics’ faced off against the young, but explosive Charlotte Bobcats on the second day of a back to back after handing the Los Angeles Lakers a loss in what many were considering to be the renewal of the once great Celtics & Lakers rivalry. To start things off in the game against Charlotte, it had looked like the hype surrounding the Celtics game against the Lakers had taken a toll on the team, as they came out flat on offense, and continually allowed the Bobcats to control the tempo of the game, and the Celtics’ defense looked incapable of finding a way to stop Charlotte’s Jason Richardson who dropped 25 points on the Celtics, and went 5-5 from behind the arch, and Raymond Felton and former Boston College star and Bobcats rookie Jared Dudley also contributed combining for 29 points, and Dudley looked like he would have been the hero of that game when he pulled down a late fourth quarter offensive rebound that he was able to put back up for an easy two points, it even earned him one of Tommy Heinsons famous “Tommy Points” something that an opposing player rarely has the privilege of recieving. The former BC star and ACC player of the year, Jared Dudley, in his first career NBA start due to the fact that Gerald Wallace was out due to injury, finished the night with an impressive statline for a rookie, 11/9/3 and even had a monsterous block against Celtics’ bigman Kendrick Perkins, it looked as if Jared Dudley would be the story of this game.

The Bobcats seemed to be doing everything right, they out rebounded the Celtics 41 to 34, and as a team shot 48.6%, the highest any team has shot against the Celtics’ defense this season, and compared to the Celtics’ 43.6% the Bobcats for the entire game looked like the better team. Paul Pierce continued to distribute the ball well, continually proving that he’s okay with being the second option on a team filled with stars such as Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, as Pierce racked up 7 assists, just one night after posting 9 assists against the Lakers. Garnett also continued his strong play, although once the fourth quarter came along he seemed to dissapear, but was still able to finish off the night with 23/11/5, and continues to state his case for Defensive Player of the year as he was also able to contribute on the defensive end with 3 blocks, one of them which is sure to give Emeka Okafor nightmares for the next week, as well as leading the Celtics’ with 2 steals. Ray Allen on the other hand, well let’s just say that he had an off night, infact compared to what we are used to seeing Ray do, he had a terrible night going 4-15 from the field, and just 1-6 from behind the arch, but that one three point shot that he made, is really all that counted at the end of the game.

The Celtics’ where able to close the defecit in the second half and keep it close mostly in part to Celtics’ sixth man, James Posey who had a great night, dropping 14 points, hitting what turned out to be a key three point shot early in the fourth quarter in just under 30 minutes, matching what Ray Allen was able to do on the offensive end in over 40 minutes. But besides James Posey, even the Celtics’ bench looked flat. Eddie House wasn’t able to get any of his shots to go down, Tony Allen left late in the second quarter due to a bruised calf, Brian Scalabrine wasn’t able to get anything done, and I don’t think he’s yet to realize that he’s going to have to start shooting the ball more if he plans on being a key piece to the Celtics’ second unit. Scott Pollard had arguably his best game thus far as a Celtic with 5pts/2rbs and a block in 11 minutes, but other then James Posey the Celtics’ bench looked flat on offense and weren’t able to capitilaze on a questionable Charlotte defense.

There was one bright spot for the Celtics’ bench however. They were able to keep the Bobcats lead within striking distance for their offense, however everytime the Celtics’ would score a bucket, the Bobcats would push the ball and score what seemed to be easy buckets, and that was the problem for most of this game, the Bobcats for the most part were scoring easy buckets, and had complete control of the tempo. When the Bobcats wanted to play uptempo basketball, Charlotte point guard Raymond Felton had no problem pushing the ball up the court, and when Charlotte decided to go into a half court set, they looked like a veteran squad out there the way they got into position and rotated on offense. The Bobcats defense was nothing spectacular combining as a team for only 2 steals, however Emeka Okafor was able to somewhat keep Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins in check with his 4 blocks, but what the Bobcats were able to do was take full advantage of their defensive awareness. Charlotte came away with 24 points off Celtics turnovers, and the entire night were outhustling the Celtics veteran squad. And the game looked over and done with when Charlotte guard Matt Carroll hit a late fourth quarter three, Carroll finished the night shooting 100%, and continues to prove that he’s a perimiter threat that needs to be taken seriously.

So down by two with 16 seconds left on the shot clock, Celtics coach Doc Rivers calls a time out to draw up a play, the balls inbounded and Paul Pierce goes to work on Jason Richardson, he gets the seperation he needs for the clear shot….and comes up short, and with the Celtics’ having one foul to give before going into the penalty, foul immediately and prepare themselves for Charlotte’s inbound pass. So, four seconds left, Charlotte has the possesion, game over right?…wrong. Charlotte inbounds and on an incredible hustle play by Eddie House, he’s able to get his hand on the ball, the ball hangs up in the air for what seems like a minute and lands directly to Paul Pierce who is immediately double teamed. Now if this was a couple years ago, Paul wouldn’t care about the double team, he’d launch the thing up there anyways, clear shot or not, but this for me at least, was the turning point that this is a completely different Paul Pierce. Pierce down by 2 with time expiring dishes out of the double team to Ray Allen, yep the same Ray Allen who couldn’t hit a shot to save his life the whole night, and the Bobcats must have thought the game was already over or something, because there wasn’t a single Bobcat jersey near Ray Allen when he caught the ball, and what happens?…Well out of the 6 three point attempts Allen made against the Bobcats, the only one that goes in, is the one that wins the game as the Boston Celtics advance to 11-1.

Los Angeles Lakers (7-4) at Boston Celtics (9-1)
Friday, November 23
7:30 PM ET
TV: NBA LP ch 753, CSN HD, KCalHD
TD Banknorth Garden

Anyone who has been a Celtics fan for more than 20 years remembers the Lakers/Celtics rivalries of times past. The Lakers were the enemies. There were some very heated battles between these two teams. Who could forget the time Kevin McHale clotheslined Kurt Rambis. That was a classic.

It seemed as though every game between these two teams was a war. Chants of Beat LA were common in the Garden. Celtics fans hated the Lakers and Lakers fans hated the Celtics. If you would ask me what my two favorite teams were, it was always the Celtics and whoever was playing the Lakers. Last year when the Garden crowd cheered for Kobe I couldn’t believe it. Celtics fans are supposed to hate the Lakers, not cheer for them.

It has been 20 years since the rivalry between these two teams was at its peak. The Lakers have had some success since then, but the Celtics have had some really hard times. Now, the Celtics are back and contenders once again. Kobe has been whining like a baby because Paul Pierce got 2 All Stars and he didn’t get any. It’s time to rev up this rivalry again. Don’t expect Celtics fans to cheer for Kobe this time around. KG and Ray Allen are students of history and I am sure the rivalry between these two teams has not been lost on them.

If history means anything to this team, when the Lakers come into the Garden they should be ready to dominate. Kobe can take over a game all by himself (as we saw in his last trip to the Garden). The Lakers are playing good basketball so this should be a good game.

Probable Starting Matchups:
PG: Rajon Rondo vs Derek Fisher
SG: Ray Allen vs Kobe Bryant
SF: Paul Pierce vs Vladmir Radmanovic
PF: Kevin Garnett vs Lamar Odom
C: Kendrick Perkins vs Andrew Bynum

Key off the Bench:
Celtics: James Posey.
Lakers: Luke Walton

Key Matchups:
vs
Kevin Garnett PPG 20.7 RPG 13.00 APG 4.2 EFF + 31.20
vs
Lamar Odom PPG 13.1 RPG 8.30 APG 2.0 EFF + 16.29
KG vs Odom should be a good matchup with KG getting the better of it.

vs
Ray Allen PPG 20.3 RPG 4.50 APG 3.3 EFF + 19.10
vs
Kobe Bryant PPG 26.9 RPG 6.60 APG 4.8 EFF + 26.00
I expect to see Pierce and Posey on Kobe and a double team whenever possible.

Keys to the Game
Stop Kobe Don’t expect the Garden crowd to be cheering for Kobe this game. Kobe can single handedly beat a team and so Doc needs to do whatever it takes to stop him and take him out of his game. Pierce should see some time guarding him as should Posey and we should see double teams coming at him whenever he touches the ball.

Take Care of the Ball. The Celtics must get their turnovers under control. They can get away with 19 turnovers with some teams, but the better teams will take advantage of them.

Defense. After a lapse in Orlando, the Celtics were back to playing good defense against the Warriors. The Celtics can’t afford to have defensive lapses against the Lakers or they will capitalize on them. For the Celtics to be an elite team, they have to make defense second nature and make it a priority.

Game Notes:
The Celtics-Lakers rivalry is one of the most storied in all basketball. In recent years it just wasn’t the same because the Celtics had fallen on hard times. But, with the resurgence of the Celtics this year, we should see the rivalry heat up. The Lakers have been playing well even though they are coming off a loss to Milwaukee on Wednesday. It would be good to hear the Beat LA chants in the Garden again. Ray Allen and KG are both big on history and I am sure the history of the rivalry between these two teams won’t be lost on them. It’s time to dominate this rivalry once again.

-Travis Rodgers

Los Angeles Lakers (7-4)
vs.
Boston Celtics (10-1)
in
Boston

Keys to Success
1. No freelancing
2. Win the hustle game
3. Outbench the bench

No freelancing: Kobe Bryant ended up getting into a pissing contest with Michael Redd last game and the very competent shooting Redd probably won that matchup and certainly won it statistically. There is no room for that even if the Lakers are struggling. Bryant has to learn to trust his teammates even when they suck because this team is much deeper than the team from last season. There are five 1 on 1 matchups that are important tonight, but no matchup is as important as the 5 of 5 game.

Win the hustle points: Steals, offensive rebounds, and blocks could decide the outlook of this game. Both teams are adept at all three categories, with Bynum’s 4.4 combined vs. Garnett’s 5.4 leading the way respectively. Lack of hustle means wasted opportunities for the Lakers and second opportunities and extra possessions for the Celtics. This is a battle the Lakers will probably have to win if they are to take the game.

Outbench the bench: While the Celtics have the best 1-2-3 combo in the NBA, the Lakers can hold their own at the 1 through 5 spot. When it comes time for bench play, however, I do not believe the Celtics can hang with the Lakers, even without Kwame Brown on the team. LA must cut deficits and extend leads every time the benches meet on the floor.

Prediction
Celtics 104
Lakers 96

Coming In:

When Kobe Bryant envisioned a Kevin Garnett trade - he was hoping to see the 10-time All Star in Los Angeles.

The Garnett to LA rumors never came to fruition and the 6-11 forward landed in Boston, causing a sure displeasure in the hearts of Laker fans across the globe.

Friday night, the Lakers & Celtics will meet in Boston in a matchup featuring four of the league’s premier all-stars.

Wednesday night, the Lakers had their 4 game winning streak snapped by the Bucks behind 26 points for G Michael Redd. Los Angeles scored over the 100 point mark, but they shot a disruptive 43 percent from the field. Bryant had 27 points, but was 7 - 18 from the field & 2-8 from 3 point range.

“Sometimes you just miss them,” Bryant said. “You stay with it, you stay aggressive. We all pretty much shot the ball like (garbage). We had control of the game throughout except the fourth quarter, and it was an uphill battle from that point.”

Boston on the other hand has come out of the gates with an 8-1 start, led by their ‘Big-Three’ which features Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce & Ray Allen. The Celtics spanked the Warriors at home, after having their 8 game winning streak snapped by the Magic Sunday.

“The good teams in this league never lose two in a row,” said Allen, who led the Celtics with 21 points. “When you lose a game, you need to know how to respond.”

Boston has won it’s last 4 home games against sub-par teams.

“There are a lot of people talking about how the Western Conference is head over heels above the East,” Pierce said. “The Lakers will be a good test for us.”

The Lakers wept the season series with Boston last season, winng each meeting by roughly 20 points, backed by a 40 point - 8 assist average from Kobe Bryant in those meetings.

Massacre’s Matchup:

Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers - Kobe isn’t one who needs motivation, but seeing Garnett in a Celtics uniform will ensure he’ll be on for this matchup. Who does Boston stick on him on defense? Predicted stats: 33 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists.

Celtic wings - Kobe & Allen are competitors, they always step their game up when meeting each other - on both ends of the floor. Predicted stats: Allen: 17 points, 2-5 3PT / Pierce: 26 points, 4 assists, 6 rebounds.

Defense After a lapse in Orlando, the Celtics were back to playing good defense against the Warriors. The Celtics can’t afford to have defensive lapses against the Lakers or they will capitalize on them. For the Celtics to be an elite team, they have to make defense second nature and make it a priority.

Game Notes:
The Celtics- Lakers rivalry is one of the most storied in all basketball.

“So listen here. On November 2nd, we’re going to go into that building, we’re opening up Boston. Right now I’m telling the Boston fans: You guys are going to lose. It’s not going to be a victory for Boston. You might as well just cheer for me, because Boston isn’t winning in Boston for the season opener. I’m sorry.” That’s what Washington Wizards star guard Gilbert Arenas had to say in his NBA.com blog yesterday, so how long until Gilbert writes up his blog about how wrong he was? Or maybe his next blog will be about how the Celtic’s defense was able to shutdown the Washington Wizards on the perimiter and hold them to 0-16 from the three point line, setting an NBA record for most three point attempts, with no shots made? Well hey Gilbert, you might not have won, but at least you helped put your team in the record books! And what was it with Brenden Haywood having to scream and yell everytime he scored a bucket? Did he fail to remember that his team was trailing by 20 points for a majority of the second half? Or maybe he was just trying to do his best Kevin Garnett impression, but obviously it didn’t phase Garnett any. The “Big Ticket” Kevin Garnett had an amazing game in his Celtics’ debut with a great statline 22pts/20rebs/5asst/3stls/3blks/, but even with all those blocks and rebounds, perhaps the highlight of his night was shutting down Gilbert Arenas everytime he tried to drive to the basket, Garnett didn’t show his usual level of intensity in this game, but he certainly let loose when he blocked a Gilbert Arenas drive to the hoop attempt. Paul Pierce continued to prove why he’s worthy of the title of “team captain”, dropping 28 points on the Wizards. But it wasn’t all positive for the Celtics. They did have 15 turnovers, and they did look a bit sloppy, but aren’t the Wizards considered by many to be a top tier team in the Eastern Confrence? If the Celtics’ can play like this and beat an elite Eastern Confrence team by 20 points, then its definitley looking to be an exciting season for the Boston Celtics and their fans.

Okay looking over the Celtic’s second unit, I have to say I’m extremely happy with what Danny Ainge has been able to do with very little to work with. From day one, when Danny tore apart a decent 2004 team, he said his plan was to acquire as many young assets as he could through the draft, give them time to develop, and then trade them away for one or two impact players. So far it looks like Ainge’s plan has paid off. Even if the Ray Allen trade was a desperate attempt to save his job, and KG just happened to fall to him, everything seems to have worked out for the best, and with just our MLE and Veterans Minimum, he’s done a solid job and putting some decent veterans around our three allstars.

James Posey - The newest member of the Celtics. Brings playoff and finals experience to the team, he can hit the open three, and plays hard nose defense which is something this team has lacked for years.

Eddie House - Not exactly the backup PG I was hoping for, but still a very servicable player. More of an undersized SG then a natural PG, but he can still effectively run the offense when Rondo needs a break. And he’s also a good shooter so House and Posey should add some decent offense to what was looking to be a pretty pathetic supporting cast.

Scott Pollard - A real hustle player, and doesn’t shy away from physical play which is a big change from what we are used to seeing out of Brian Scalabrine. He won’t put up big numbers on the offensive end, but he’ll clog up the middle and take some pressure off of Kendrick Perkins.

These three veterans along with Rajon Rondo, A Healthy Tony Allen (From what we have been told), Brian Scalabrine, Leon Powe, and the rookies Gabe Pruitt and Glen Davis, should be a decent supporting cast for our big three.
