The Celtics lost to the Indiana Pacers 97-84 but that wasn’t the biggest loss. With 3:01 left in the third, Tony went in for a dunk after he was fouled and went down clutching his left knee. Dickerson said that it looks like he may be lost for the rest of the season. Earlier in the game, Scal went down and hurt his right knee. Both are undergoing MRI’s to determine the damage. Tony had 19 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals already when he went down. He was playing the best ball of his career and it losing him is a huge loss. If this keeps up, we may run out of players.
On the bright side, Perk and Al started the game and played well together. Perk finished with 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 blocks and played some good defense in the paint. Al finished with 4 points and 13 rebounds. He couldn’t seem to get his offense on track tonight and missed several shots in the paint. A bright spot (for me at least) was that Powe finally got into the game. As with every game that he gets minutes in, he made the most of them with 7 points, 7 rebounds and 1 block in just 11 minutes. I love this kid.
Gerald Green played 43 minutes, a new career high for him, but struggled with his shot going 5-15 and finishing with 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. He had a couple of his fly by dunks to add some excitement to the game. Allen Ray came in after Tony was carried off the court and finished with 3 points, 1 assist and 2 steals.
Gomes had 7 points and 1 rebound and didn’t seem to be his normal aggressive self. I am not sure if it is a confidence thing or if he is still not feeling well. Or maybe coming off the bench threw him off. Rondo had a solid game and finished with 7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal in just 12+ minutes. Telfair had a solid game with 15 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists and 1 steal, starting in place of the injured Delonte West.
Powe and Rondo both continue to impress in limited minutes. I still don’t understand why these two kids aren’t playing more. Hopefully Scal will need to rest his knee for awhile and Delonte will play at the 2 when he comes back because Wally and Tony are out and Doc will have no choice but to play Powe and Rondo.
Injuries are decimating this team. Wally will be out for 1 - 2 weeks. West is out for another game or two at least. Scal may be out awhile. Tony may be out for the rest of the season. Pierce will still have to wear the protective boot for another week or more and so he won’t be back any time soon. Losing Tony tonight is a real blow to the team as he was the one young player that had taken the step to the next level with his play. It was impressive that the players that were left didn’t give up but fought hard until the end.
