Orioles Against Twins

The Orioles went into tonight hoping to start a winning streak, that is certainly exactly what they did. A.J.Burnett Road Grey Jersey|A.J.Burnett Grey Jersey|New York Yankees #34 jersey They ensured a series split using the Twins as a result of a good outing from Zach Britton and very timely hitting against Twins pitcher Nick Blackburn.
Both pitchers had quick 1-2-3 first innings, with Zach Britton retiring the side on just seven pitches. He didn't even supply a chance to settle down on my couch before he was headed time for the dugout. Nick Blackburn wasn't much worse while he only needed eleven pitches (seven which were thrown to Derrek Lee).

The Twins got about the board within the second, as Michael Cuddyer took Britton deep which has a fly ball that merely kept carrying in the wind, right over the fence in center field. That's the beginning of a tricky inning for Britton, because he followed the property run using a four-pitch walk to Jim Thome and, following a strike out, a bunt single to Luke Hughes. Britton got the subsequent two batters to limit the damage, but he was forced to throw twenty-one pitches. A valuable thing he only needed seven in the first!
If BrittonJoba Chamberlain Home Pinstripe White Jersey|Joba Chamberlain Jersey|New York Yankees #62 jersey needed a breather after his long inning, this teammates were a lot more than happy to comply. Vladimir Guerrero hit the initial pitch he saw to shortstop where Matt Tolbert fielded it deep inside the hole and threw offline to first, giving Vlad an infield hit. Do you enjoyed it as you probably won't see that again this year. Luke Scott followed Vlad with a single to right, then both batters moved up on a wild pitch. That gave Adam Jones a chance to knock in 2 runs, and that's exactly what he did. In the 2-2 count, Blackburn threw a fastball lacking in the strike zone that Adam just reached out and slapped down the correct field line for a 2-run double. It wasn't the most emphatic double ever hit, nonetheless it was a good approach by Jones.

After Mark Reynolds hit a fly ball to left for the first out, Matt Wieters stepped in, a perfect 5-for-5 with runners in scoring position this coming year. Could he possibly keep that streak alive? Could he continue being the clutchest hitter the person clutched? Of course he could, how dare you doubt him? And he didn't just acquire some piddly single; he hit a home run to right away centerfield. It was Matt's third home run of the year, that i'm happy to say that the last three series Wieters has looked good at the plate. Applying the series in The big apple last week, Matt moved 7 for 22 (.318) with 2 BB, 2 2B, 3 HR.

Britton had more troubles inside the third, allowing two singles before inducing a double play ball to get himself out of your inning. The good news is that neither ball was hit hard and both were grounders. That does gonna happen having a ground ball pitcher, Perhaps.

Nick Markakis led off the third inning which has a solid single to left, his firstly two hits on the night. It's nice to see Nick making base, although we didn't view him for very long as Derrek Lee immediately grounded in a double play, clearing the bases. It's really a shame, too, because Vlad followed Lee's AB with a home run, plus it wasn't a cheap one either. It landed deep in the left field seats to set the O's up by four runs. That might be last time the Orioles scored amongst gamers.

Britton cruised through the fourth and fifth innings, but fell apart in the sixth. He walked a couple of the first three batters he faced (he struck out your other one), who then goneJoba Chamberlain grey Jersey|Joba Chamberlain Jersey|New York Yankees #62 jerseyto live in second and third over a ground out by Thome. With two down, Britton attended a full count to Danny Valencia before he hit a high chopping ball with the center from the infield, scoring both runs. The prompted a call from the Mark Connor, and Britton just looked exhausted around the mound. We found out after the sixth inning that Britton has been fighting flu-like symptoms, along with his post game press conference Buck Showalter asserted he was pretty wheezy when Connor sought out there. At any rate, Britton got Luke Hughes heading to a grounder to third base, ending the inning with a two-run lead.

Jim Johnson took over in the seventh inning and only agreed to be fantastic. He only needed eight pitches to have through the inning, prompting many inside gamethread (and I'd imagine around Birdland) to demand JJ to go back in the eighth. It might have made sense in my opinion, but Buck instead went with Koji Uehara. When inquired on it inside the press conference, Buck backed up his decision by stating that if JJ had gotten into trouble inside eighth he would have been out tomorrow, and this way JJ are prompted to go tomorrow if needed. It sounds good, I assume, but I'd believe that if you use JJ for just two innings you'd still Koji tomorrow, but whatever.

After Koji began warming inside bullpen, the stress level underwent the roof on Camden Chat. It absolutely was obvious achievable move that Kevin Gregg can be pitching the ninth, understanding that doesn't make anyone (except Kevin Gregg) happy.

But first things first. Koji wasn't at the top of his game tonight. He gave up one operate on two hits and a walk. A stroll? What the heck, Koji! That managed to get a one run game, which means that Gregg would have no room for error.

It is easy to get on Kevin Gregg's case given how he's pitched this year, but just if you happen to were worried that you may were going way too hard on the guy, go check out the quotes he gave Britt Ghiroli. I'll wait..............

I am aware, right?! Who will that guy think he could be? What a douche. But that douche was the guy being released with a one-run lead within the ninth, so for the brief moment I personally had to desire success for him. And really, it wasn't destined to be THAT tough of the inning. He was facing the bottom of the Twins lineup, including two batters (John Holm and Matt Tolbert) that are only inside the lineup as a consequence of injuries to Joe Mauer and Tsuyoshi Nishioka.

Well, Gregg went 3-1 on Holm prior to him to show up, then struck out Tolbert. That left him with only Denard Span standing between him and glory. Span hit a thigh-high 92 mph fastball deep to centerfield. Jones raced back, I prepared myself being pissed off, then he caught it out and about, crashing in to the wall. It wasn't nearly as spectacular a catch because one Markakis built to preserve Gregg's first save of the season, but it was great in its own right.

So there you go. O's win, 5-4. Zach Britton battled through illness, Matt Wieters continued to hit, Vladdy did his part, and Kevin Gregg didn't share the game. Not a bad night.
