Leather Ball to Return on Jan. 1

NBA commissioner David Stern, in a stunning reversal, has decided to shelve the new microfiber composite basketball after just a few months of use and switch back to the old leather model for all games starting Jan. 1, according to sources close to the situation. The decision will be formally announced by the league Tuesday, sources told ESPN.com.

NEW YORK - The Celtics are not planning any roster moves to shore up their dwindling corps of centers. Even with Theo Ratliff (bulging disc) and Michael Olowokandi (torn abdominal muscle) out, Danny Ainge said yesterday he’s willing to hang on until Al Jefferson returns from his appendectomy. It doesn’t hurt that, with last night’s 122-118 win over the Knicks, they’ve now won three straight.

NEW YORK - Less than a week ago, the Celtics were doing the limbo. At 1-6, they had achieved the franchise’s worst start in 28 years and were listing toward Secaucus. How low could they go? Apparently the Bostonians were unwilling to lower themselves any further for the time being. With last night’s 122-118 victory over the Knicks, the Celts have won three straight for the first time in 19 months.
