Celtics drop 9th Straight

BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Celtics are just racking up losses and injuries. Joe Johnson and Josh Smith each scored 21 points as the Atlanta Hawks handed the Celtics their ninth straight loss, 82-76 on Wednesday night. The Celtics have dropped 16 of their last 18 and have lost a franchise-worst eight straight home games. "To let this slip away really hurts," Celtics forward Ryan Gomes said. "When you are up 15 points at halftime, you need to win." Zaza Pachulia added 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench for Atlanta, which snapped a three-game losing streak and has won both meetings with Boston this season. "I thought Joe Johnson was the key in the second half. He put us in position to win and was willing guys around," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. Boston, already without leading scorers Paul Pierce, Wally Szczerbiak and Tony Allen, also lost Al Jefferson to an ankle injury in the fourth quarter. "We missed Al's inside presence late in the game," Celtics center Kendrick Perkins said. "It's tough right now ... We are struggling and have to deal with it." Atlanta opened the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run and took a 66-62 lead on a Johnson fadeaway jumper with 7:13 remaining in the game. Rajon Rondo sank two free throws 23 seconds later and ended a Celtics drought of 8:20 without a point.

Celtics Close Out Road Trip with 89-81 Win over Blazers

Celtics finish the road trip 1 and 4 closing out the trip with an 89-81 win over the Portland Trailblazers. There were a lot of positive performances tonight and even though the Blazers aren't the best of teams, the Celtics fought hard and played well together. Tony Allen is one of the brightest spots. He was aggressive from the first basket to the last and finished with 22 points on 9-13 shooting to go with 8 rebounds and 3 steals and some solid defense. Gomes was another bright spot as he broke out of his slump with 18 points on 7-9 shooting and 10 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 assist. The best part of his game was the defense he played on Zach Randolph. He never did get going and that was a big factor in the game. Wally once again struggled with his shot, shooting only 4-14 from the field and 7-10 from the line. But he made some big plays in the 4th to help assure the win. He also had 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal in last minute that ended in a dunk and helped to secure the win. Delonte was playing injured but played over 30 minutes and finished with 8 points on 2-8 shooting to go with 3 rebounds, 4 assists and only 1 turnover.

Celtics drop 6th straight

SEATTLE (AP) -- Chris Wilcox is different from most forwards around the NBA. For the Seattle SuperSonics, that's a good thing. Wilcox, at 6-foot-10, 235 pounds, may not have the strength or weight of other big forwards, but he makes up for it with speed and quickness. Wilcox flashed his way through middle of the Celtics' defense for a season-high 24 points Sunday night to help the Sonics to a 101-95 victory against road-weary and injury-depleted Boston.

Celtics drop 4th straight

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- After their most lopsided victory against Boston, the Los Angeles Clippers hardly cared that Paul Pierce was missing from the Celtics' lineup. Elton Brand had 25 points and 10 rebounds, Tim Thomas also scored 25 and the Clippers snapped a four-game home losing streak with a 100-77 victory Wednesday night as the Celtics' leading scorer watched helplessly from the bench in street clothes. "I know their best player's down, but we have one of our best players down as well," Corey Maggette said, referring to Clippers point guard Sam Cassell. "Our team's been really struggling, so we needed a win. We're just trying to stay afloat. We've got a couple more games at home before we take a long road trip, so hopefully we can do some damage." The Clippers won for only the second time in nine games overall, while Cassell sat out due to a chronic case of plantar fasciitis in his left heel. The injury has forced him to miss four of the last eight games and has limited him to just 58 minutes of playing time during that stretch. Boston played its third straight game without Pierce, expected to be sidelined for at least another week because of a stress reaction in his left foot. "We'll have to wait and see," Pierce said. "I'll stay in L.A., stay off of it and after New Year's head back to Boston." Sebastian Telfair had a team-high 18 points for the Celtics, who have lost four in a row after winning five straight. Al Jefferson, who had a career-high 15 rebounds in Tuesday's loss at Denver, had 14 boards against the Clippers and scored 10 points. But he shot only 4-for-16 from the field, and Boston finished at 31.9 percent overall. "With Paul and Wally Szczerbiak out of there, every time Al touches the ball he's going to get double-teamed," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "Where Al's different is that last year, when he got trapped, he couldn't take a shot. It was a turnover every time and he would get completely frustrated. But now, he's really handling the double-team well. He's dribbling out of them, making good passes and finding other ways to stay involved."
